9. Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid — $26,395

Subaru of America, Inc. continues to bolster the safety credentials the Crosstrek Hybrid, the high-efficiency compact crossover that has also received freshened front styling for 2016. For 2016, the Crosstrek Hybrid comes standard with the Blind Spot Detection/Rear Cross Traffic Alert system, which also includes Lane Change Assist.
The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid sports a more refined look for 2016, with a redesigned gloss black grille and chrome accents, new headlights and front bumper and fog light covers with chrome accent trim. The Crosstrek Hybrid also gains new interior refinements, including distinctive orange stitching for the standard model’s cloth upholstery, the Touring trim’s leather upholstery and the leather-wrapped steering wheel in both models.
In addition to optimizing the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder BOXER engine to reduce internal friction, Subaru applied a number of other efficiency-enhancing technologies to the Crosstrek Hybrid. An Auto Start-Stop system can shut down the gasoline engine when the vehicle is stopped. Brake regeneration works when the car is coasting or the driver has applied the brake, recapturing kinetic energy from the wheels to recharge the hybrid battery.
The Crosstrek Hybrid’s engine uses a slightly higher compression ratio (10.8:1) than in the standard gas model (10.5:1), along with reduced-friction piston rings and valve springs and a higher capacity exhaust gas regeneration (EGR) system with an EGR cooler. The main performance boost comes from the permanent-magnet AC synchronous electric drive motor, which produces 13.4 hp from 1,500-6,000 rpm. Total hybrid system output is 160 hp at 6,000 rpm vs. 148 hp at 6,200 rpm for the gas model. The starter and alternator functions are combined into one unit.
The drive motor also contributes 48 lb-ft of torque from 0-1,500 rpm. The result is total system torque of 163 lb-ft at just 2,000 rpm (compared to 145 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm for the gas model), adding a significant boost to low-speed driving performance. The electric drive motor is neatly integrated into the Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission). The CVT includes a manual mode with steering wheel paddle switches. A 100.8v, 13.5kW nickel-metal hydride battery, with 0.55kWh capacity, is located under a revised rear floor area, a location that contributes to handling agility.

Sonata Hybrid continues to visually differentiate itself from other Sonata models with purposefully unique wheels and front and rear fascia that improve aerodynamics while highlighting Sonata Hybrid’s advanced technology and efficiency. The 2016 Sonata Hybrid SE model estimated combined fuel economy of 42 mpg is a ten percent improvement over the previous model. Sonata Hybrid will be built at Hyundai’s Asan, South Korea assembly plant and will go on sale this summer.
The heart of the 2016 Sonata Hybrid is the downsized 2.0-liter Nu GDI four-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission that houses a more powerful 38 kW electric motor and clutch where the torque converter would normally be found. Sonata Hybrid’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED) delivers the same responsive, engaging driving characteristics Sonata owners expect while improving fuel economy through the use of the larger electric motor.
This innovative transmission has been upgraded significantly since its introduction with the original Sonata Hybrid and now uses an electric oil pump, which helps improve efficiency. It is possible for Sonata Hybrid to operate solely on electric power at speeds up to 75 mph by decoupling the gasoline engine from the rest of the drivetrain.
The award-winning design of the latest Sonata is enhanced by a series of functional changes to the front and rear fascia for the 2016 Sonata Hybrid that highlight its efficiency and the advanced technology below the surface. These visual changes also lower the coefficient of drag to an exceptionally low 0.24; the lowest in its class and identical to the Tesla Model S. Visual changes to the Hybrid’s exterior include a unique larger grille, front and rear bumpers, front fenders, front and rear lights, chrome side sill moldings, Hybrid badging and new eco-spoke alloy wheel designs. A distinctive instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch color LCD multi-purpose display provides Hybrid drivers with additional information about the hybrid system’s operation.
Sonata Hybrid will offer two exclusive exterior paint options: Graphite Blue Pearl and Seaport Mist. Interior color choices include gray and beige in cloth or leather seating configurations and an all-new Blue Pearl option for leather seats. Sonata Hybrids equipped with Blue Pearl leather seats will include contrast stitching and trim accent pieces.

The 2016 Optima Hybrid continues to offer all the qualities that consumers love about the third-generation Optima, including its striking European design, abundance of premium features, and exceptional value, all while enhancing fuel economy with a fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain that helps minimize visits to the pump.
Available in two well-appointed trim levels – Hybrid and Hybrid EX – the 2016 Optima Hybrid benefits from a 2.4-liter engine that works in conjunction with a 47-horsepower electric motor to produce a combined 199 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque. Supplying the electric motor is a powerful 47 kW lithium polymer battery, while a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission transfers all the power to the Optima Hybrid’s front wheels. The 2016 Optima Hybrid features unique exterior elements that enhance aerodynamics and help set it apart. The Optima Hybrid has additional vents on the front bumper to increase airflow and reduce drag. Low rolling resistance tires are mounted to 16-inch alloy wheels or super low rolling resistance tires are mounted to 17-inch alloy wheels (depending on trim) to help reduce weight and drag. The front grille is also unique as are Hybrid-exclusive fender badges, and certain components make extensive use of aluminum instead of steel to help offset the weight of the battery.
Both trims are handsomely equipped with premium standard features, but for those seeking more from their Optima Hybrid, both trims are available with packages that up the hybrid’s premium feel. The Hybrid Convenience Package adds a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, UVO eServices2 with rear-camera display3, LED front positioning headlights, and an acoustic laminated windshield and front door windows, which help the cabin stay library-quiet. The Hybrid EX can further be dressed up with the Technology Package, which adds the Panoramic sunroof with gloss black B-pillars, Blind-Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and a Back-up Warning System3.
In addition to the Hybrid’s design, performance and efficiency, it comes standard with a variety of safety features. The Honda Civic Hybrid is a variation of the Honda Civic with a hybrid electric powertrain. Honda introduced the Civic Hybrid in Japan in December 2001. In the United States, it was the first hybrid automobile to be certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) from the California Air Resources Board.

The 2016 Prius is anticipating fuel economy ratings of 54 MPG city / 50 MPG highway / 52 MPG combined (Final EPA figures pending.). That’s better than any mass-produced passenger vehicle available without a plug. And, as before, the Prius sips regular-grade gasoline. A new Eco grade model is expecting ratings of 58 MPG city / 53 MPG highway / 56 MPG combined thanks to lighter weight and further optimized aerodynamics.
The new Prius’ premium interior debuts advanced technology complemented by features that are functional, fun and also delight the eyes. The wrap-around dash design, form-hugging seats, ease of controls and enhanced visibility combine to make the new Prius a highly engaging automobile. The new Prius interior is much quieter than the previous model, creating an ideal environment in which to enjoy Toyota Entune® multimedia and connectivity.
Safety is important, of course, and the 2016 Prius will be among the first U.S. models to offer Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS (P)), a new multi-feature advanced safety package anchored by automatic pre-collision braking. Boasting an edgier, more chiseled look, the redesigned front end features sharp character lines that flow from the sheet work and terminate in an angular eight-point polygon grill. A sharp, blade-like front diffuser sweeps up from the center and dissects the front corners to form triangular fog light wells that create a wider look and feature prominent lower aero sills. The aggressive stance created by the front end continues along the CR-Z’s sides with flared full-length side garnishes that create a planted and sucked-to-the-tarmac look, complemented by new swept five-spoke design alloy wheels. The upward sweeping aero features of the front are mirrored at the rear, pushing the exit pod design elements to the sides for a wider looking stance.
Upgraded interior surface treatments include a new brushed metallic finish to the door handles, front paneling and center console. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and new-for-2016 heated and leather-trimmed seats on the top-of-the-line EX-L Navi trim include an attractive contrasting stitch pattern. Creating an even sportier cockpit feel, a new center console rises between the seats with a comfortable armrest and deep storage compartment. Allowing for this addition is a new standard electric parking brake (EPB) that eliminates the traditional parking brake lever and offers easier push-button operation. Another new standard convenience feature is the Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop system that simplifies approaching, entering and operating the CR-Z.
Newly standard on all CR-Z models is the 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. The intuitive and easy-to-use Display Audio lets you swipe, tap and pinch–just like on a tablet computer or smartphone–to control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings and other advanced features, including Pandora® compatibility. CR-Z EX and EX-L Navi trims include Honda LaneWatch™, which displays a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway on the Display Audio screen. The 2016 Toyota Prius c may be the smallest of the brand’s eight hybrid models, but the new-for-2016 Toyota Safety Sense-C system gives it a big advantage over other small cars. And no other car in the compact segment can touch its remarkable 53-MPG EPA-estimated city fuel economy, making Prius c big on eco and fun. A new Persona Series Special Edition combines eye-grabbing color combos and other upgrades.
Toyota gave the Prius c a major styling and interior upgrade for 2015, and so the big news for 2016 is the available Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C), which equips the car with an array of driver-assist technologies: Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
Toyota is giving the Prius c an infusion of playfulness for 2016, too, with the Persona Series Special Edition. This distinctive model goes on sale in December and is limited to just 1,500 units. The Persona Series Special Edition comes exclusively in Black, with a choice of two unique color accents that amp up the fun: Electric Lime and Cherry Pearl. The contrast color accents can be found on the lower front grille trim, beneath the headlights and on trim beneath the side windows. The accents also cover the outside power mirrors and interior rear-view mirror shell. You may have seen such paint schemes on customized exotics driven by pro ballplayers, but the effect costs far less on a 2016 Prius c Special Edition, which also includes 15-inch black alloy wheels and a custom “Persona Series” badge.
The Prius c is offered in four numbered grades, and the Special Edition is built on the Two. That means it’s equipped with extras including fabric-trimmed two-tone seats; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat; 60/40 split fold-down rear seats; cruise control, a cargo area cover and engine immobilizer.
