It is a bit complicated. Every automaker is free to decide when it is best to release a new car. However, there are some release dates that are common for many automakers.

From Debut to Actual Sales

It is a widespread practice to show new cars from January to March each year at various auto shows such as North American International Auto Show, Chicago Auto Show, New York International Auto Show, etc. These cars typically resemble the future model year if they aren’t concepts. For instance, we’ve seen cars for the 2017 model year this year already. However, it doesn’t mean that they will be available only in 2017. The so-called ‘model year’ usually starts earlier than the calendar year. And every automaker defines for itself when its model year actually starts.

Release Dates

Two major periods for releasing new cars are summer and autumn (up to December). The production usually starts in spring but dealerships must have a buffer period for selling previous year’s cars and promoting new ones. That’s the best time to buy an older model as a new car because the newer model may be far more expensive.

So, if you’re willing to be one of the first owners of a specific car for the upcoming model year, you should start purchasing in summer/autumn or make a pre-purchase earlier (if available). Also, there is no general rule for automakers and dealerships, so be sure to check by yourself when the specific car in the specific dealership will go on sale. Usually, dealerships are happy to provide this kind of information to their potential customer.
