Despite being made in Japan, the Mazda CX-9 full-size crossover SUV is an export-only vehicle that is not sold in Japan’s domestic market.

Production

The Mazda CX-9 debuted 10 years ago as a 2007 model sharing the Ford CD3 platform with the Ford Edge and the Ford Fusion. All these years the only assembly facility responsible for the CX-9 was Hiroshima Plant in Japan.

Hiroshima Plant & Other Facilities

Mazda’s Hiroshima Plant is an old automobile manufacturing complex in Aki and Ujina, Hiroshima, Japan. It was opened in March 1931. For 50 years, it was the sole automobile manufacturing plant of Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan.

Some Mazda cars were produced in the US under the contract with Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant, and Twin Cities Assembly Plant. However, the CX-9 model is being built only at Hiroshima Plant.

The most recent addition to Mazda’s production facilities is Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation (MMVO) opened in 2014 in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico. This plant produces the Mazda3 currently.
