It is said that Chevy Silverado pickup trucks and their rivals Ford F-150 display the American way of life. How American are they from the inside?

There are three facilities affiliated with the assembly of the Chevy Silverado: Flint Assembly in Flint, Michigan, Fort Wayne Assembly in Roanoke, Indiana, and Silao Assembly in Silao, Mexico.

Flint Assembly

Flint Assembly has two assembly lines and produces full-size GM pickup trucks for consumers as well as the commercial heavy-duty versions. It is GM’s oldest assembly plant in North America and a popular destination for pickup truck customers who want to watch their vehicles being built. More than 13 million cars and trucks have been produced here.

In recent years, Flint Assembly has been home to GM’s award-winning, heavy-duty pickups, vehicles that epitomize the very people who assemble them. Hard working. Reliable.

In 2015, GM officials announced plans to invest $877 million in building a new body shop for the assembly plant, locating it closer to the Flint Metal Center, which supplies sheet metal and other parts used in the Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickups produced at the assembly plant.

Fort Wayne Assembly

3,030,000-square-foot Fort Wayne Assembly produces a variety of vehicles on GM’s GMT K2XX platform, including the new Chevy Silverado. Facilities include a body shop, paint shop, general assembly, and sequence center. It is one of North America’s most productive assembly plants that employs more than 3,600 people.

Just as with Flint Assembly, GM announced the plans to invest more than $1.2 billion to expand and upgrade Fort Wayne Assembly last year. The new construction will add 1.5 million square feet of new space at the plant, will include a new pre-treatment facility and expanded body shop, as well as an expansion of its general assembly capabilities. After all the construction is done, the total campus will expand to 4.8 million square feet. The upgrades will improve the efficiency of the plant which will include a reduction in emissions.
