There are many reasons why the airbag light (or SRS light; SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System) comes on and you should remember – it is extremely dangerous to ignore it! The airbag light warns you that the airbag may not deploy in an accident.

Suggestions & Troubleshooting

One of the most common reasons why the air bag light comes on is because something is wrong with the seat belt sensor that detects whether the belt is properly fastened or not. It could happen if a nickel or something else is interfering with the switch. So, if your airbag light comes on, the first thing you should do is check your seat belt switch.

Another potential reason might be in damaged wires or corroded airbag module under the driver’s seat. In this case, even if everything is fine with the seat belt, the car’s computer system simply couldn’t detect the connection. If the driver’s seat was exposed to moisture, it is very likely that airbag module has corroded shortly after the incident.

Also, very common reason for the airbag light to come on (especially in older cars) is because the airbag clock spring needs replacing. It is a simple but substantial rotary electrical connector. Its main function is to maintain continuity with the drivers airbag, horn and the electrical wiring as the steering wheel turns. If it is out of service, the airbag won’t deploy.

Yet another common reason for the airbag light to come on is because your car’s battery might have drained recently and the airbag battery backup depleted. The issue may correct itself without your interference once the battery charge is fully restored. However, some vehicles have a software imperfection, so the faulty code will not disappear without manual reset.

If the car has been in an accident, it is very likely that the airbag needs to be properly reset. It is obvious in case your airbag has been deployed, but even if it hadn’t for some reasons, the accident might have triggered the car’s crash sensors.

Avoid Driving, if Possible

No, seriously. Don’t risk your life! If the airbag light is constantly on, it means that there is a problem with your safety system, which is leaving you unprotected. You should take the car to your dealer or a qualified service as soon as possible to get the problem fixed and ensure the safety of you and your family. Unlike the check engine light issues, when you can try to diagnose and fix the problem yourself, this one is better to entrust professionals immediately.

Of course, if you’re confident with your actions, you can try to fix this one yourself as well – there are few guides from the automobile enthusiasts with photos and detailed description (like this one).

The Cost of Maintenance

Depending on the cause, the cost of inspection and repair may vary from $50 (if it is a simple interference in the seat belt switch) to several hundred. It is wise to get inspection right away even if you have no funds for full repair. At least, you will know what to do and how it will affect your safety on the road, which is the most important.
